On My
Mind
Thirty thousand feet subtracted by
your five foot two
My new song, “On My Mind” will be out this Friday, September 5!
I’ve had the experience - and I hope you have too - of falling deeply, madly in love. I’m talking about that all-consuming feeling that engulfs you like a wave and sends you tumbling without an idea of which way is up.
I wrote this song one morning in an upstate new york apartment. I was bundled up against the late autumn frost seeping in through the building’s insulation. At the time, the idea for my new album was only starting to form, so I’d gotten into the habit of waking up and almost immediately opening my recording software to tinker. I spent a few months doing this, playing around without any goal in mind. It had been a long time since I’d written a song and I didn’t want to put too much pressure on myself.
As it often goes with these things, long periods of stalling, fruitless work lay the foundation for sudden bursts of progress. And so it was with “On My Mind.” After nearly 2 months of writing scraps of lyrics and chords, this song tumbled out of me on that cold November morning. Within 30 minutes of picking up my guitar, I had written and recorded the entire demo.
There’s something simple about this song that I find deeply charming. It doesn’t try to do too much. It only observes what it feels like to have an absolute smoke show living rent-free in my head. I hope you enjoy :)
Lyrics
You’re on my mind
Telling me day and night
I’m on your mind
I should stay and unwind
Every little word you say
Every little look my way
Every little step you take
Is running races all through my mind
Every day, every night
Again I count the miles
Keeping me from you
Thirty thousand feet
Subtracted by your five foot two
I always have to fly
When things are going right
Again I count the miles
There’s nothing else to do
I’m not ready to leave
But I’ve got to go
If had a choice
I would take it so slow
Time always has to fly
When it is you and I
I’m not ready to leave
I can tell you know
I’m losing my head now
Halfway across the bridge
Stomach is feeling sick
I think I’m going to turn around
And miss my flight cause
I’ve lost my head now
Ears are ringing like a bell
Feel the pressure start to swell
I should have quit my job
And stayed in bed cause
You’re on my mind
Telling me day and night
I’m on your mind
I should stay and unwind
Every little word you say
Every little look my way
Every little step you take
Is running races all through my mind
Every day, every night
Every day, every night
Every day, every night
Every day, every night
Every day, every night
Every day, every night
Every day, every night
Every day, every night
The last word
